Congratulations on your new aquarium! Before you can introduce any fish, you need to go through a crucial process called "cycling." This establishes a healthy environment for your aquatic friends.
What is Cycling?
Cycling is the process of growing beneficial bacteria within your aquarium. These bacteria are essential for breaking down harmful waste products produced by fish, such as ammonia and nitrite. This process creates a stable and safe environment for your fish.
The Nitrogen Cycle: Simplified
Cycling Methods:
-Introduce a small number of hardy fish (like livebearers).
-Monitor water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) daily.
-Perform frequent partial water changes to dilute toxins.
-Add a dechlorinator to any new water.
2. Fishless Cycling:
-Add an ammonia source (pure ammonia, fish food, or a commercial cycling product).
-Monitor ammonia and nitrite levels daily.
-When nitrite levels begin to rise, add a source of beneficial bacteria (like a commercial starter culture).
-Continue monitoring until both ammonia and nitrite levels are consistently zero.
